Web Media BB | Website Design for Sports Teams & Small Businesses
Building a website for your sports team, club, or league can feel overwhelming if you've never done it before. But it doesn't have to be. Break it down into the right steps, in the right order, and it's a lot more manageable than it looks.
Here's the full process, from planning to launch, whether you're building it yourself or handing it off to someone else.
Before touching any design or platform decisions, get clear on the site's job. Most sports organization websites need to handle a few of these:
Not every site needs all five. A small training academy might not need standings or rosters, while a multi-team league almost certainly does. Get this list right first, everything after this step depends on it.
Once you know what the site needs to do, turn that into an actual page list. A typical sports organization site includes:
This is where a lot of organizations get stuck. You've generally got two paths: a bolted-on website builder from a team management platform like TeamSnap or LeagueApps, or a custom-built site, most commonly on WordPress.
If you want the full breakdown of that decision, we covered it in detail here. Short version: bolted-on builders are faster to set up but limit your design and lock you into their platform. Custom sites take more upfront work but give you full control and better long-term SEO.
Even a simple site needs consistent branding to look professional. At minimum, you need:
If your organization takes signups or payments, this needs to work smoothly, it's often the single biggest reason people abandon a signup halfway through. Whatever tool you use, test the entire flow yourself before launch, start to finish, on both desktop and mobile.
Most parents signing their kids up for a program are doing it from their phone, not a desktop. A site that looks great on a laptop but is hard to navigate on mobile is losing signups you'll never even know you lost. Test every page, every button, and the entire registration flow on an actual phone before calling it done.
A handful of things make a real difference here, and none of them are complicated:
Before you call it live, walk through the site as if you were a parent who's never heard of your organization. Click every link. Submit the contact form. Go through registration all the way to the end. It's much easier to catch a broken link or a confusing page before real families are trying to use it.
